About This Site

Welcome to Civic Sage

I’m glad you’re here.

My name is Charles Jett — Charlie to most people — and I built this site because I believe the ideas that shaped America are too important, too fascinating, and frankly too much fun to leave locked away in libraries and textbooks. I spent fifty years as a Naval officer, a business school teacher, a coach, a writer, and a lifelong student of this republic. Everything I’ve learned points to the same conclusion Jefferson reached two centuries ago: a free people who stop thinking, stop reading, and stop paying attention won’t stay free for long.

That’s not a warning. It’s an invitation.

Civic Sage is four projects that grew out of that conviction — and I’d love to introduce you to all of them.

Making a Great America is where we sit down together with all 85 Federalist Papers — and the Anti-Federalists who pushed back — and ask what they were really arguing about. Short episodes, plain English, big ideas.

The Jefferson–Adams Letters is my personal favorite. Two old men, former rivals, writing letters by candlelight about everything that mattered — politics, mortality, religion, and the future of the country they helped build. It’s like eavesdropping on the most important conversation in American history.

The Critical Skills Blog is where I do my thinking in public — more than 800 essays on the skills that citizenship demands and that most of us were never taught.

It’s All About Skills brings those conversations to life in podcast form — practical, historical, and always honest.

To explore any of these, just use the navigation menu at the top of the page. Each one has its own page with a full description and a link to take you there.

Welcome. Pull up a chair. There’s a lot worth talking about.
